More than 90% of action items directed at TICO are now complete

Mississauga, ON – Today, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) released its latest update on progress addressing recommendations from the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario (OAGO). This update reflects progress achieved as of May 31, 2026.

TICO has completed 91% of the action items directed specifically to the organization, reflecting significant progress on the areas within its direct responsibility. Overall, 72% of recommended action items have been completed to date, while two remaining TICO-led items are in progress and expected to be completed this year.

“Our team remains committed to implementing the Auditor General’s recommendations,” said TICO CEO Richard Smart. “With each milestone achieved, we continue to strengthen consumer protection and enhance the effectiveness of our regulatory oversight.”

Since the last update, TICO has continued to advance key initiatives to improve oversight, strengthen compliance processes, and enhance its risk-based approach to regulation.

Key areas of progress include:

  • Advancing a risk-based oversight framework, including enhanced risk rating systems and policies to guide compliance and enforcement activities.
  • Ongoing inspections aligned to registrant risk levels, with a focus on higher-risk companies.
  • Strengthening complaint monitoring and data-driven insights to support regulatory decision-making.
  • Enhancing internal systems, policies and processes to improve efficiency, transparency, and consistency across core functions.

TICO will continue to maintain transparency through future progress updates.

The OAGO’s 2023 report contained a total of 16 recommendations, with nine of those directed at TICO, six directed at both TICO and the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement (Ministry) and one directed at the Ministry.
