TICO Certification

Every person who is working for a registered Ontario retail travel agency and is selling travel services or providing travel advice to the public must, by law, meet the TICO's Education Standard. This includes Supervisors and Managers on a registrant's registration record with TICO. To meet the Education Standard and obtain TICO Certification, individuals must complete and pass an on-line multiple choice exam(s).

TICO Registration is NOT included with the Certification Course

Successfully passing the TICO Education Standards Exam and obtaining TICO Certification does NOT automatically provide individuals with a TICO registration and licence to open and operate a retail or wholesale travel business. Obtaining TICO Certification allows you to sell travel services or provide travel advice to the public on behalf of a TICO registered Ontario travel agency.

Individuals must submit a separate registration application to TICO to obtain a licence to operate a travel business in Ontario. For more information regarding TICO’s registration process and the requirements to register a business – click here.

Exam Registration Fees

Travel Counsellor Exam: $35.00
Supervisor/Manager Exam: $35.00
Combination Exam (Travel Counsellor and Supervisor/Manager Exam): $50.00

Note:
Exam registration fees do not include the cost for a Proctor. Any proctoring fees are between the exam candidate and the Proctor or the proctored venue.

Exams

The Education Standards Program is administered by TICO. The program consists of two levels of exams which may be taken individually or combined:

  1. Travel Counsellor
  2. Supervisor/Manager
  3. Combination (one exam with both the Travel Counsellor and Supervisor/Manager levels)

Travel Counsellor Exam

Successful completion of the Travel Counsellor Exam is required for anyone wishing to sell travel services or provide travel advice for the purpose of selling travel services to the public on behalf of a TICO registered Ontario travel agency.

Supervisor/Manager Exam

Every travel agency in Ontario is required to name a Supervisor/Manager on their application for registration or renewal. This individual is the Supervisor/Manager “on record” with TICO. Successful completion of the Supervisor/Manager Exam is required for the person named on record with TICO as the Supervisor/Manager. Please note that any individual who wishes to advance in the industry in the future are welcome and encouraged to take the exam.

Combination Exam

A combination exam is available for those wishing to write both the Travel Counsellor and the Supervisor/Manager exams at the same time.

Overview of Registration Process

All registrations for exams must be completed online through TICO’s website. There are 4 basic steps to register for your TICO exam:

STEP 1: Download the Study Manual

The TICO Education Study Manual may be downloaded at no cost from the TICO website. It is available as a PDF document. You will need Adobe in order to download the PDF. A link to the free Adobe download is provided.

Note: Candidates should not sit the TICO Education Standard exams without prior study of the Manual.

STEP 2: Choose a Proctor

A Proctor is an impartial “supervisor” for the writing of the exam. You can choose a Proctor from one of the approved Proctored Venues that we list on the TICO website OR you may look for a Proctor on your own based on the guidelines provided. NOTE: It is important to confirm your arrangements with your Proctor prior to registering the date and time online with TICO to write your exam.

STEP 3: Arrange an Exam Date and Time

You must speak with your Proctor and confirm a date and time to write your exam. However, if you choose to only email the proctor, please make sure they confirm the exam date and time with you before you proceed with Step 4.

STEP 4: Register with TICO to Write the Exam

Once Steps 1, 2 and 3 are completed, you must register online and provide payment to TICO at least 14 days in advance of your chosen exam date. Failure to register and provide payment to TICO 14 days in advance of your chosen exam date will result in your exam date having to be re-scheduled.

Optional Forms Required at the Time of Registration

Third Party Authorization Form

TICO will only release exam results to the person who wrote the exam. Our policy requires that we obtain written consent from an exam candidate in order for us to release exam information to a third party. If you intend to request to have your results sent to a third party (i.e. Manager or Trainer), then you must submit the Third Party Authorization Form at the time you register. Forms require a signature and therefore they can be scanned and emailed or faxed to the TICO office on the same day that you register.

Special Needs Accommodation Form

TICO has a policy to accommodate individuals with special needs. If you have a special need that requires an accommodation when writing the TICO Education Standards exam, you must submit the Special Needs Accommodation Form at the time you register. Please note that the Form must be completed by an appropriate professional (e.g. physician, psychologist, rehabilitation counsellor, special educator, or other professional) to certify that your disabling condition requires the requested test accommodation. Forms require a signature and therefore they can be scanned and emailed or faxed to the TICO office on the same day that you register. Following the exam, TICO will email the result to the third party.

Exam Results

Results will be mailed (via Canada Post) to the person who wrote the exam to the address provided by the candidate at the time of registration, usually within 10 business days after the exam writing date.

All results are reported as either Pass or Fail.

Pass: If you receive a Pass Letter, keep the original and make a copy for your manager/supervisor. You must show the original at the time you present the copy, in order to verify its authenticity. We strongly recommend that you do not give away the original copy.

Fail: If you receive a letter indicating that you were unsuccessful in writing the exam, it will be accompanied by a list of the modules which require more study.

Candidates may register to re-write the exam. There is no limit to the number of times a person may re-write the exam. The fee to register for a re-write of the exam is $24.00.
